Patio furniture is great for relaxing outside on warm, sunny days, perhaps by the pool or after grilling up some dinner. But, if you want to be able to enjoy the use of your patio furniture for years to come, you have to protect it from the elements. Wind, rain and even strong sunshine can have damaging effects and ruin your furniture over time. Want to protect your patio furniture from rust, rot and other weather-related damages?
A little planning ahead can go a long way. If extreme weather—from torrential rains to heat waves—is in the forecast, protect your patio furniture in advance. If possible, move it into a storage shed or garage to escape the weather. If not, cover it up with a few high-quality outdoor furniture covers, which are designed to protect against most weather-related damages.
Additionally, taking the time to clean your patio furniture once or twice per year keeps it free of dirt and grime. Use a sponge and mild dish soap to scrub away the gunk and thoroughly rinse. And don’t forget about the cushions. If they have removable covers, toss them into the washing machine. If not, wash them with dish soap as well. There are a variety of commercially sold fabric protectors that you can use once the fabric is dry.
You may also want to buy an outdoor furniture protector, which can be used on metal or plastic. These products act like a sunscreen for your patio furniture, protecting the sun’s rays from fading your outdoor set. After a good wash, apply an even coat of the protector with a brush and reapply as directed by the manufacturer’s instructions. For wood furniture, a coat of regular paint will do the trick.
Ensure that all cushions are secured down to prevent them from flying away with the wind. Most cushions have straps that you can either tie or Velcro to the chairs. If not, buy adhesive Velcro strips and secure them to the bottoms of the cushions and the seats of the chairs.
With a little bit of extra TLC, your lazy afternoons and fun-filled evenings can take place in the comfort of your favorite patio furniture well into the years ahead.
