On the surface, it might seem like homeowners insurance is unimportant for a vacation home. You probably only spend a few weeks a year in the home. You already have insurance on your primary residence. You might be asking yourself if insurance on your vacation home is really necessary. If you are questioning the importance of insurance on your vacation home, consider a few reasons why it is important.
Many vacation homes are near beautiful locations including forests, mountains, lakes and oceans. The location is ideal for a relaxing vacation, but the location also makes the home more susceptible to some natural disasters including forest fires, landslides and flooding. Because of this, you want to make sure your vacation home is insured whether occupied or unoccupied.
Because of the remote location of many vacation homes, they can be an easy target for theft and vandalism. No one is around to witness the destruction, so the thief can get away easier. Insurance on your vacation home can allow you to get reimbursed for any stolen items or damage to your property which might take place while you are away. Installing some sort of security system in your vacation home is a good idea, especially if you will be away for a long period of time. Although a security system will discourage some thieves, it will not deter all thieves from attempting to take your valuables. That is where good homeowners insurance protects you from large losses.
Many people who own a vacation home rent out the home when they are not using it. Whether letting friends use your home or letting strangers borrow it for a time, there is no guarantee that others will treat your home with as much care as you. Because of this, if you are allowing others to use your home, it is a good idea to make sure you have good insurance on it.
