Trucking is an important commercial venture. You want to make sure that proper insurance covers your loads and your cab. A strong commercial trucking policy will usually cover incidents that happen while you are on the job.
However, a commercial trucking policy may not cover you all the time.
Sometimes, trucking insurance will only cover your truck when it is on official business. But, trucks still have to operate without loads from time to time. Some trucks may even operate without trailers.
You likely need a form of insurance called non-trucking liability insurance. This type of policy works if you aren't using your truck for business reasons, but are still driving it.
How Does Non-Trucking Liability Coverage Work?
Non-trucking liability can cover trucks when drivers use them for non-business purposes.
Non-trucking liability is different from another common form of trucking insurance called bobtail insurance. Bobtail insurance applies in cases where a cab is not attached to a trailer. Bobtail insurance can apply regardless of whether a truck is on assignment or not.
However, non-trucking liability insurance will usually cover accidents or incidents that happen when a truck isn't on business. This is regardless of whether you attach a trailer to the cab or not.
For example, non-trucking liability could apply when a trucker is pulling an empty trailer. It could also apply if a driver is using a cab for personal use. If a trucker drives his or her cab as a personal vehicle and gets into an accident, commercial trucking insurance may not help cover the costs they incur. However, non-trucking liability coverage will likely kick in.
Obtaining non-trucking liability coverage can be a bit of a guessing game. Some trucking companies may offer the coverage in addition to your commercial policy. Others may require truckers to buy their own insurance.
When buying trucking insurance, check with your company and your insurance agent. Their recommendations can help you pick out the best policy for you.
