Foggy, dull or scratched headlights can cause visibility problems while driving at night. But replacing headlights can be a pricey endeavor. Fortunately, restoring headlights is simple and only takes about an hour of your time. And once you've completed the task, you can drive around more safely than before.
Cleaning
The first step to headlight restoration is cleaning the lights. Avoid glass cleaners because the ammonia can cause the plastic to yellow. Instead, use soapy water to clean the headlights. Then rinse and dry with a clean towel. Once the headlights are clean, use automotive masking tape to protect the areas around the lights.
Sanding
Before a full restoration, try polishing a small portion of a headlight with a bit of toothpaste. If the plastic becomes clearer, you can use this method on all the lights. If not, you'll need to move onto sanding. Soak some sandpaper in water to soften it, then sand down the headlight plastic in straight lines; refrain from sanding in circles. After sanding, wipe the plastic with a clean towel to brush off debris.
Polishing
Apply a rubbing compound according to the directions, then use a buffing pad until the headlights clear up. This should restore the plastic's shiny finish. Then remove the masking tape and you're all set.
